WorldShare Launches Emergency Response Appeal for Goma Amidst Intensifying Civil Conflict
Press release | 28 January 2025

GOMA, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO – January 28, 2025 – As fighting intensifies in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s (DRC) eastern city of Goma, WorldShare has launched an emergency response appeal to provide critical aid to those affected by the escalating conflict.
The current crisis stems from the resurgence of the M23 rebel group, a predominantly rebel force that has been engaged in armed conflict with the DRC Government.
The resurgence of the M23 rebel group has triggered a humanitarian crisis, displacing hundreds of thousands of people throughout the eastern territories of DRC since the start on 2025 and leaving many without access to basic necessities.
On Friday the 24th of January the rebel forces invaded the region’s capital city of Goma, where almost a million displaced people have taken refuge. Reports indicate widespread killings, the destruction of homes, and the disruption of essential services such as electricity, internet connectivity, and water supply. [cite: 1]
WorldShare’s emergency response appeal aims to address the urgent needs of those affected by the conflict, including:
- Food and water: Providing food packages and clean water, to displaced families and communities.
- Medical assistance: Supporting medical facilities with essential supplies to treat the injured and sick.
- Fuel for generators: Ensuring the operation of critical infrastructure such as hospitals.
“The situation in Goma is dire, with countless lives at stake,” says Dr Glyn Henman, CEO of WorldShare. “We are committed to providing immediate assistance to those in need and ensuring their safety and well-being.”
WorldShare has a long-standing presence in the DRC and is working closely with local partners to deliver aid effectively.
